One-Eyed Smile
Opened my eyes from thinking of you
Thought, I should call more
When I saw a dull orange light
Two lights
Two thin wavering lines
Curved toward each other
But it was early for the moon
One shrunk to a splinter, vertical on the left side
Like a cat’s eye
Pointing down at a thin smile
A one-eyed smile
Staring from across the water in the pre-dawn sky
It closed to a star as the smile began to fade
And fade and fade, and I thought the star must follow
But it stared, cold and bold and unwavering
Opened again into a slicing eye
Returned, the smile
Grew in curves toward each other
Seeking connection
Came together, a hook at one end
A sharp curve pointing back, up and away
A starship trail
That turned into a dove
Swelled belly beaming down on the ocean
Curved perfect up to a thin, notched head
Down to a wispy lighttail
Clouds all gone, it rose on its slow gravity arc
Soared through the dark
A massive alien messenger bird
And I thought, I could send a note
